Black baked horseman

Some pipes - however fragile - survive for generations simply because they sit at the back of a cupboard. This is the fact with this pipe: a sculpture of a horseman that was discovered by a grandson short time ago. He took it out to show around and eventually the object found its way to us by chance. Coincidentally, we already have a similar piece in our collection. While the subject matter is identical, the style of depiction reveals the hand of a different maker; the new arrival is clearly more refined and of higher quality. It is now up to us to come to a definitive identification of its origin. For the time being, both pipes are classified as Nigerian, but research is ongoing about which ethnic group.
